We offer carriage style harness training only. The difference between carriage style and normal training is that we want our horse to work calmly in a natural position. We do not use any training aids except the slider side reins. We want our horses to be obedient and calm in any situation. Below is an outline of our basic training. |
The horses are taught to lunge, to help build muscle and to teach them voice commands. The horses wear a bitting rig with slider side reins which will encourage them to keep their head in the proper position. |
The next step is to teach the horse to ground drive using long reins and the bitting rig. This will get the horse used to turns, stops, and smooth starts. At this time we also introduce them to the obstacles. |
In this phase, we switch the horses to the driving harness and we ground drive them to get them used to the feel. When they are working calmly we will ground drive them to a roadster. |
Now we get to ride. The horses are worked at the walk and trot in different patterns. When they are working solidly in the ring we drive them through the obstacles and in the neighborhoods to get them used to traffic. Lastly, I give the person that will be driving the horse a few lessons. |
