The fourth and final phase is the marathon. This is a favorite of the competitors, the horse and driver go on a cross country drive on a pre-determined course which has 4 to 6 obstacles. Each obstacle has a theme, and has 3 to 5 gates that the horse and driver must go through. This is a timed event but not a speed event, it is up to the driver to keep the horse at an even pace so that they will fall with in the time window at the end. After the marathon the horses are checked by a vet for soundness. The minis are very good at these events. |

The third phase is the cones course. This is a fun timed event through a course of about 15 cone gates. The gates are set according to the width of the wheels on the vehicle. The trick is to get through the cones in the shortest time with out knocking down any cones, and to make it a little harder a tennis ball is balanced on the top of each cone. This is a loved event for both spectators and competitors. |

The first phase of a CDE is “Presentation”. This is the beauty contest of the CDE, plus there is a check on equipment for safety and an inspection of the required tool kit. Harness and vehicles should be clean and fit the size of the horses. The driver should be well dressed and fit with the theme of the vehicle. |
|
Phase two of competition is the dressage test. The driver memorizes a short pattern that is driven in a ring and is judged on the smoothness of the turns, the drivers ability to control the horse and the horses willingness to work. Beginners in the sport use a very simple pattern that is driven at the walk and trot. It is the quite challenge to see how perfectly the driver and horse can make the circles and turns. |
